Concept Producer - Northern Music Awards

  • The first Nordoff and Robbins Northern Music Awards -was held at Manchester’s Albert Hall.

  • The NMAs recognises & celebrates the breadth of musical talent across the North.

Antony Szmierek - Launch of NMAs

The first ever performance packed show with Lisa Stansfield, Liam Fray, The Ks , English Teacher and Antony Szmierek honoured industry figures, venues, festivals, breakthrough and renowned talent - and fundraised for a new, state of the art music centre to open in Salford.

This music making and therapy place will use the power of music to create vital connections for diverse, local communities and people who are socially isolated, have life limiting illnesses or disabilities.

I had the pleasure of developing the concept of this brand-new awards show for the charity.

As NMAs concept producer I shaped the show format, all the award categories, judging panel, the award nomination process, & helped bring the show to life.

I galvanized support for the awards across the Northern media, cultural and music sector, local government, and secured public backing for the NMAs from two Mayors. I arranged sponsorships, business, and media partnerships, facilitated local and national media coverage for the NMA’s, and facilitated a Newcomer Award showcase at Lion’s Den with XS Manchester featuring talented finalists: Seb Lowe and The Pale White.

Indie icon Tim Burgess received the first Northern Music Award – to mark his outstanding 30 year career and contribution to northern music, including 18 albums and 17 top 30 singles.

The Reytons

The Reytons were given the Disruptor in Music award, and I couldn’t think of a more deserving band for this award. Off the back of their number one album and stadium tour success, the band have put Rotherham on the map and continue to challenge pre-conceived perceptions of mainstream music.

Manchester music royalty Lisa Stansfield was honoured with the title of ‘Northern Icon’. The singer, best known for hits including: ‘All Around the World’, ‘In All The Right Places’, and ‘People Hold On’ closed the show with an outstanding live performance.

And of course, my favourite band, Courteeners got the Best Band gong - lead singer Liam Fray performed Oasis song ‘Masterplan’ and Courteeners classic ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ to the sell out crowd.

Albert Hall

Nordoff and Robbins music therapy can be transformative, from a child with autism finding their voice to an adult with dementia reconnecting with memories and family.

The awards was a special night for the charity & all the hard working team involved, Northern music, & for Manchester.
